The Gatekeeper in My Head: Finding Confidence at 50+

The world of beauty is for everyone!

For years, I treated the entrance to Ulta like a restricted zone. In my head, I’d built a wall out of 'not enoughs'—not young enough, not trendy enough, and certainly not 'perfect' enough. I’d drive by, convinced that the world inside was reserved for twenty-somethings with flawless winged eyeliner and airbrushed skin. At 50-something, I figured I simply wasn't the demographic they were looking for.
But recently, I finally decided to stop being my own gatekeeper and walked through those glass doors. What I found inside wasn't a club for the 'perfect'; it was a community of real people—some my age, some with messy hair, and all of them just being themselves. Now that I’m actually working there, I’ve realized the biggest beauty secret of all: you don’t need a certain birth year to belong, you just need the confidence to show up as you are.

The "Age Gap" is Often a Mental Mirage

We tend to believe that certain spaces—like trendy beauty stores—have an invisible age limit. I spent years thinking I was "past the expiration date" for places like Ulta. But the moment I stepped inside, I realized the only person keeping me out was me.

  • The Lesson: Don't let a number on a calendar dictate where you are allowed to shop, learn, or explore.

Perfection is Not the Price of Admission

I expected to see "perfect" people, but I found real people. Some of my coworkers are in their 50s; some have "flaws" they don't bother to hide; all of them are talented and kind.

  • The Lesson: You don't have to be "finished" or "flawless" to show up. Confidence isn't about looking perfect; it's about being comfortable in your own skin (even if that skin has a few more character lines than it used to!).

So, the next time you find yourself idling in the parking lot of a new experience, thinking, 'I don't belong there,' take a breath and walk in anyway. You might just find a new career, a new community, or at the very least, a really great new lipstick.

The most surprising part of this adventure? I went from being someone who was afraid to walk in to being the person welcoming others in. Working here has shown me that everyone—regardless of age—is just looking for a little bit of joy and a way to feel like their best self.

  • The Lesson: Sometimes the place you’re most intimidated by is exactly where you’re meant to be.

Have you ever talked yourself out of trying something because you felt you weren't the 'right' age or type? I’d love to hear your story in the comments!
